Portfolio Committee commends Urban Mobility for exceeding MyCiTi ridership targets

The City of Cape Town’s Portfolio Committee on Urban Mobility is impressed with the increase in the MyCiTi commuter numbers during the post-Covid recovery phase. 

During a special sitting of the Portfolio Committee on Monday, 11 September 2023, the Urban Mobility Directorate's performance for the last quarter of the previous financial year was tabled. This is a report on the Service Delivery and Budget Implementation Plan for 2022/23. The directorate reported an outstanding performance of 18 323 763 passenger trips on the MyCiTi bus service for the period 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023. 

Monitoring service delivery and budget performance is a core function of Portfolio Committees. Every financial year, the Portfolio Committee and the directorate agree on service delivery targets to match the directorate's budget. The directorate agreed to a target of 16 900 000 passenger trips for the 2022/23 financial year.

'We are pleased that the directorate has exceeded our expectations by far for the past financial year. In addition to this positive result, the directorate has reported up to 68% growth in MyCiTi ridership year-on-year since 2021,' said the Chairperson of the City's Urban Mobility Portfolio Committee, Councillor Mikhail Manuel.

'This level of user uptake has surpassed expectations and demonstrates a robust post-Covid-19 recovery, and the growing confidence that commuters have placed in this safe, accessible transportation system. Between the staggering cost of living and ongoing growth in the city, more and more motorists are making the smart switch to this affordable public transport option where it is available. Not only are our passengers beating the fuel price hikes, but also playing an active role in reducing congestion on our roads. The Urban Mobility Directorate is committed to promoting the uptake of efficient public transport and we applaud this positive shift towards sustainable urban mobility. We have set ourselves new, higher targets for the current financial year and I look forward to seeing the trend continue upwards,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

For the current 2023/24 financial year the directorate has set a target to increase the MyCiTi ridership to 18 500 000 passenger trips.

'The Portfolio Committee commends the directorate for their ambitious approach to growing public transport uptake. We are looking forward to monitoring their performance,' said Councillor Manuel.
